Energy broker fees and commission

This is our transparency page. It explains how Fidelity Energy is paid when it arranges your business energy contract, how Forever Communications is paid, and how to see the broker cost in your own contract.

  • Forever Communications, part of Forever Group

In short

Fidelity Energy is normally paid commission by the supplier you choose. It sets the commission as an uplift on your unit rate and/or daily standing charge, so it is included in your quoted prices. Your contract documents show the estimated commission. You can opt instead to pay a fee by invoice. Forever Communications is paid by Fidelity Energy out of that commission.

How Fidelity Energy is paid

Fidelity Energy's terms and conditions (version dated 23 October 2026) say its services carry no charges payable by you except in two cases: a contract cancellation fee, or if you choose the direct invoice payment method. Otherwise, it is paid by the suppliers.

Here is how that works:

  • Commission is paid via the supplier. When Fidelity Energy secures a supply contract for you, the supplier pays it commission
  • Fidelity Energy sets the commission. It is charged on each kWh of electricity or gas (in pence per kWh) and/or by uplifting the daily standing charge
  • It is included in your prices. The uplift is added to the supplier's charges, so the unit rate and standing charge you are quoted already include it
  • You pay it through your bills. Because it is per kWh and per day, the total depends on how much energy you use and how long the contract runs

This is the most common way brokers are paid. Ofgem says brokers "charge you for their services. Some charge an upfront fee, but most are paid a commission by the energy supplier you choose."

How to estimate the total commission

Fidelity Energy's terms set out how the estimated commission over a contract is calculated. In words:

PartHow it is worked out
Unit rate commissionThe unit rate uplift (pence per kWh) multiplied by your annual consumption, multiplied by the number of years in the contract
Standing charge commissionThe daily standing charge uplift multiplied by the number of days in the contract
Estimated totalThe two figures above added together

The estimated commission for each supply contract is set out in your contract documents. Because most of it depends on consumption, the actual amount changes if you use more or less energy than forecast.

A simple way to think about it: the same uplift on a longer contract, or on a site that uses more energy, adds up to more commission. That is one reason to compare contract lengths as well as rates, which our guide to the cheapest business energy covers in more detail.

Suppliers pay brokers on different schedules: some quarterly in arrears based on actual use, some partly at the start of the contract and the rest at the end, some annually, some on renewal. Those schedules are between the supplier and Fidelity Energy; what you pay is the uplift included in the rates you agreed.

Paying a fee instead: direct invoicing

If you would rather not have commission built into your rates, Fidelity Energy's terms let you opt at the start not to have an uplift on your unit rates. In that case Fidelity Energy invoices you directly for its services, quarterly in advance, with VAT added.

Which option suits you depends on your circumstances. Some businesses prefer one all-in unit rate; others prefer to see the broker cost as a separate line. Ask about both when you contact us. Fidelity Energy's terms say it sends you the key terms of the supply contract to check before you sign.

Fidelity Energy's terms also say that if you have already paid the commission in good faith through your supplier, you will not be asked to pay Fidelity Energy directly for the same services. If a supplier stops paying the commission, Fidelity Energy can move you to direct invoicing for the rest of the contract, after telling you in writing, and any direct payment covers only unpaid amounts so you do not pay twice.

The contract cancellation fee

Fidelity Energy's terms include a contract cancellation fee. It can apply in two situations:

  • You sign a supply contract arranged through Fidelity Energy and then decide not to go ahead with the transfer
  • While a supply contract sourced by Fidelity Energy is live, you enter into another supply contract that Fidelity Energy did not source (its terms say this includes after a change of tenancy)

The amount and how it is calculated are set out in clause 6.3 of Fidelity Energy's terms, and we can go through it with you before you sign anything. This is another reason to read the contract carefully: there is no cooling-off period for business energy once you agree, and accepting a quote is binding.

How Forever Communications is paid

Forever Communications works as an agent of Fidelity Energy and is paid by Fidelity Energy, out of the commission Fidelity Energy receives.

We think you should know that before you talk to us, which is why it is on this page and on our business energy broker page. If you want to know how much of the commission on your quote relates to the broker service, ask us: the principal terms and contract documents are the place to check it.

What Ofgem requires suppliers to show you

Business energy contracts have to be clearer about broker costs than they used to be. Under Ofgem's rules:

RuleApplies toFrom
Broker costs shown in the contract's principal termsMicrobusiness contracts1 October 2022
Suppliers may only work with brokers in a qualifying dispute resolution schemeMicrobusiness contracts (Ofgem announced in April 2024 that it would extend this to small business contracts)1 December 2022
Standards of Conduct (treating business customers fairly)All non-domestic customers, whatever their size1 July 2024
Broker costs shown in principal terms, and given to you on requestAll non-domestic contracts signed on or after that date1 October 2024

So whatever broker you use, your supplier's principal terms should show what you are paying for the broker's service. Ofgem's guidance on getting a business energy contract lists "if any broker fees or commissions are included in the price" among the things to know before you agree. If you are a microbusiness, our microbusiness energy rules page covers your extra protections.

Other Fidelity Energy terms worth reading

Commission is not the only part of a broker's terms that affects what you pay. Fidelity Energy's terms also include:

  • Using Fidelity Energy for the life of the contract. While a supply contract it sourced is live, you agree not to enter into another supply contract it did not source; doing so can trigger the contract cancellation fee
  • Selling or leasing a site. If a site it manages is sold or leased and the new owner stops using its services, a termination fee applies for that site, based on the income it would have received for the rest of the contract
  • Flexible procurement. If you choose its flexible procurement service, you appoint Fidelity Energy as your only broker for those services for the contract period, and you accept the market risk of buying in stages
  • Changes to charging. It can change the way it charges for its services, after giving you reasonable notice
  • Complaint costs. It reserves the right to recover its costs from a complaint if an alternative dispute resolution provider finds in its favour, or if it reasonably believes the complaint is frivolous

It is worth knowing all of this before you sign. We can go through the terms with you, and the full text is on Fidelity Energy's website.

Questions to ask any broker about fees

  • How are you paid: commission from the supplier, a fee from me, or both?
  • How much commission is included in this quote, per kWh and per day?
  • What is the estimated total over the contract term?
  • Can I pay a fee instead of an uplift?
  • Is there a cancellation fee if I sign and then do not go ahead?
  • Does anyone else, such as an introducer, receive a share?

You should get a straight answer to each. If you want to see how Fidelity Energy's panel prices your supplies, and exactly what commission is included, contact us with a recent bill. If you are unhappy with how a broker has treated you, our energy broker ombudsman page explains the complaints route.

How Forever Communications helps with business energy

Forever Communications is part of Forever Group, which looks after phone systems, business mobiles and connectivity for UK organisations. For business electricity and gas, we work as an agent of Fidelity Energy, an independent business energy broker that prices your requirements across its panel of suppliers. We are not an energy supplier, and neither is Fidelity Energy.

  • Like-for-like quotes: we help you gather your bills, meter details and contract end dates so suppliers quote on the same basis
  • Plain-English terms: we can talk you through unit rates, standing charges, contract length, renewal and the broker commission included in the price before you decide
  • Better timing: we help you plan a renewal ahead of your contract end date, or move off deemed and out-of-contract rates
  • More than the basics: Fidelity Energy also offers green (REGO-backed) electricity, flexible procurement, half-hourly supplies, multi-site contracts and bill validation
  • Your choice: you decide which quote, if any, to accept; prices are set by the suppliers and confirmed at quote

We work with businesses, charities, hospitality, farms and multi-site organisations. Send us a recent bill and we can take it from there.

Frequently asked questions

How much commission do energy brokers charge?

It varies by broker, contract length and consumption, so we do not quote a typical figure. Fidelity Energy sets its commission as an uplift per kWh and/or on the daily standing charge, and your contract documents show the estimated total. Ask any broker for the figure on your specific quote.

Do I pay the broker's commission?

Yes, indirectly. The supplier pays the broker, but the commission is built into the unit rate and/or standing charge you pay. That is why Ofgem requires suppliers to show broker costs in the principal terms of business energy contracts.

Can I see the commission before I sign?

Yes. Suppliers must show broker costs in the principal terms of business energy contracts signed on or after 1 October 2024 (microbusiness contracts since 1 October 2022) and give you the information on request. Fidelity Energy also sets out the estimated commission in your contract documents.

Can I pay a broker fee instead of commission?

With Fidelity Energy, yes. Its terms let you opt at the start not to have an uplift on your unit rates and be invoiced for its services instead, quarterly in advance plus VAT. Ask about this when you request a quote.

Is there a fee if I cancel?

Fidelity Energy's terms include a contract cancellation fee if you sign a supply contract through it and then do not go ahead, or if you take another supply contract it did not source while its contract is live. The calculation is in clause 6.3 of its terms. There is no cooling-off period for business energy contracts, so read everything before you sign.

How is Forever Communications paid?

Forever Communications works as an agent of Fidelity Energy and is paid by Fidelity Energy, out of the commission Fidelity Energy receives from the supplier.
